How to Clean Memory Foam

Cleaning a memory foam mattresses is not as hard as you would expect. Because the foam is so dense, soaking it is not recommended; drying the inner layers of your mattress is too difficult, and though the material is hypo-allergenic and anti-microbial you risk mold spores deep inside of the inner layers. If you soak your mattress you should expect it to take days, even weeks, to dry fully unless you have an industrial cleaner. This is far from ideal for most people, so surface cleaning is recommended. For a quick, easy, fresh clean, try this method of surface cleaning. It only takes a few hours, and most of times is spent waiting, so you can get other chores done around the house while you clean your mattress.

To clean your memory foam mattress, you will need only a few items.

Baking Powder
Vacuum
Spray bottle filled with water and dish soap (2/3, 1/3) [Add Woolite for exceptionally dark stains]
2 Towels or wash cloths

1. Sprinkle your baking powder over the whole mattress or mattress topper and let it sit for 30 minutes. Then vacuum it up. The powder will leave the memory foam mattress with a fresh smell, and vacuuming will also remove dust, hair, and anything else that may have made its way onto your mattress.

2. Locate the stains and spray them with the soap mixture. Rub the stain in a circular motion with a damp wash cloth. If the spot doesn't disappear with soap, add Woolite and spray and rub once more. Once you've gotten all the spots, spray them with water and use a dry towel to blot up the remaining soap and water.

3. Dry your mattress with a fan, hair dryer, or by putting it in a sunny dry place. It is a good idea to clean your mattress at least once every few years, more often for mattress toppers. Keeping your mattress clean of stains that could break down the material can add years of life back. To protect your investment consider getting a slip cover for your memory foam mattress or mattress topper so that it doesn't get stained in the first place.
